Vendetta (Catherine Ling, #5) by Iris Johansen

Title: Vendetta
Author: Iris Johansen
Series: Catherine Ling
Genre: Mystery, Suspense, Thriller
Format: Hardcover
No. of Pages: 416
Date of Publication: October 23, 2016

Description: With his dying breath, Carl Venable, head of the CIA task force on terrorism and Jude Brandon’s final link to terrorist ringleader Max Huber, gives Brandon a mandate: keep his daughter, Rachel, safe at any cost. But Rachel Venable has a shocking, twisted past of her own, one that comes rushing back after her medical clinic in Guyana is attacked by Huber―the same man who murdered her father and kept her imprisoned for months.

Brandon and Catherine Ling, Rachel’s longtime ally and fierce protector, are determined to keep Rachel out of danger, but she knows that it’s impossible to stay hidden when Max Huber wants you dead.

As Rachel and Brandon race against the clock to bring Huber down before he can orchestrate a disaster that will lay waste to half the country, they also fight a growing attraction to each other – an attraction that could prove just as dangerous as Huber himself.

In this gripping, fast-paced novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen, one thing is clear: everyone has a vendetta, and no one will rest until they get their revenge.

My Thoughts: Iris Johansen is at again by writing another thrilling book on our favorite CIA agent Catherine Ling.

Iris Johansen starts the story out with a not so unfamiliar character, Venable, who is a CIA agent and handler of Catherine Ling. Venable's story starts out slow and it is hard to piece together what all is going on in the story, which is not typical for Iris's stories. Usually, it is easy to understand where the story is going and it draws you in almost immediately. I did not find this to be the case.

As the story progresses, you learn that the main character is not Venable or Catherine Ling, but Venable's daughter Rachel Venable. It is not until Rachel is introduced into the story that Iris truly starts to draw you into the story and turns it into a non-stop page turner.

Iris Johansen continues to writer a page turning, action packed story, that is filled with characters from her previous books as well as introducing new ones. You will be re-introduced to Hu Chang, Catherine Ling, and Cameron. In addition, Iris adds new characters like Brandon, Nate, Monty, Red Star, and Maria.

In addition to action, Vendetta is filled with tension and romance, specifically between Brandon and Rachel Venable, and Cameron and Catherine Ling. The relationships between these characters adds a certain element of passion that is needed to help break up the potential impending threat that Red Star is trying to follow through on.

This is mean to be another book in the Catherine Ling series, however, I would have to disagree with this. Catherine Ling does not make her first appearance into the story until Chapter 5 and even then it is minimal at first. The true focus of the story is on Rachel Venable. I would call this a Rachel Venable book, which I am hoping that we will get more of considering the way that Iris Johansen leaves you hanging at the end of the book.
