Description: A toxic river divides nineteen-year-old Violet Bates's world by gender.
Women rule the East. Men rule the West.
Welcome to the lands of Matrus and Patrus.
Ever since the disappearance of her beloved younger brother, Violet's life has been consumed by an anger she struggles to control. Already a prisoner to her own nation, now she has been sentenced to death for her crimes.
But one decision could save her life.
To enter the kingdom of Patrus, where men rule and women submit.
Everything about the patriarchy is dangerous for a rebellious girl like Violet. She cannot break the rules if she wishes to stay alive. But abiding by rules has never been her strong suit, and when she is thrust into more danger than she could have ever predicted, Violet is forced to sacrifice many things in the forbidden kingdom ... including forbidden love.
In a world divided by gender, only the strongest survive...
My Thoughts: I kept seeing this book (and series) being recommended through social media feeds stating that if you liked the Divergent Series that you would like this. After a while I finally decided to take a chance on it, and I am glad I did.
The book is about two nations, Matrus and Patrus. In Matrus the females are seen as more prominent and important than the males, but in Patrus the exact opposite is true.
The story follows Violet, who has had a really rough life that started with her younger brother, Tim, being tested by Matrus and found to not be a fit for Matrus society. Violet attempted to smuggle her brother over to Patrus where she had a cousin named Cad who was going to help him, but they were caught. Violet was sent to Matrus' version of prison and her brother was sent to the mines.
Violet struggles in prison and continues to get in fights with others. Eventually she is chosen by the Queen for a special mission that will take her to Patrus. She accepts as she is told that if she succeeds that she will be able to see her brother Tim.
I quite enjoyed this book and Bella Forrest does really well with describing the story that is unraveling in front of you. She even includes a map that shows both Matrus, Patrus, and the Veil river that divides the two at the very beginning of the book.
Overall The Gender Game gets an 5 out of 5. It took a long time for the book to set up the back-story for Violet, which detracts somewhat when viewing the book as a stand-alone. Fortunately, this is merely the 1st book in the series of 7.
Rating: 5 out of 5
