Description: A man is dead, shot three times in his home office. But his computer has been shot twelve times, and when the cops arrive, his pregnant wife is holding the gun.
D.D. Warren arrives on the scene and recognizes the woman--Evie Carter--from a case many years back. Evie's father was killed in a shooting that was ruled an accident. But for D.D., two coincidental murders is too many.
Flora Dane sees the murder of Conrad Carter on the TV news and immediately knows his face. She remembers a night when she was still a victim--a hostage--and her captor knew this man. Overcome with guilt that she never tracked him down, Flora is now determined to learn the truth of Conrad's murder.
But D.D. and Flora are about to discover that in this case the truth is a devilishly elusive thing. As layer by layer they peel away the half-truths and outright lies, they wonder: How many secrets can one family have?
My Thoughts: Lisa Gardner writes each chapter from the point of view of either Evie, D.D., and Flora and all of them intertwine with one another. The transition from one point of view to the other is done seamlessly and without any confusion on how they connect.
The first chapter draws you into the story making you want more by starting it with a murder. The story evolves from a simple murder to a more complex one with many twists and turns. The story focuses both on the present and on the past and Lisa Gardner does a wonderful job in making sure that you will not see how the present murder and the past murder are connected.
Lisa Gardner writes a mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat while you continue to try to guess whats coming next. She does a splendid job in making sure that you do not see what's coming.
Rating: 4 out of 5
About the Author: New York Times #1 bestselling crime novelist Lisa Gardner began her career in food service, but after catching her hair on fire numerous times, she took the hint and focused on writing instead. A self-described research junkie, she has parlayed her interest in police procedure, criminal minds and twisted plots into a streak of bestselling suspense novels. Her 2010 novel, THE NEIGHBOR, won Best Thriller from the International Thriller Writers. Most recently, she was honored with the Silver Bullet Award for her work with at-risk kids and homeless animals. Lisa loves to hike, travel the world, and yes, read, read, read!
Readers are invited to enter the annual "Kill a Friend, Maim a Buddy" Sweepstakes, where they can nominate the person of their choice to die in Lisa's latest novel. People have nominated themselves, spouses, bosses. It's cheaper than therapy and twice as much fun! For more details, visit Lisa's website.
Lisa's latest novel (January 2020) is WHEN YOU SEE ME. A cold case quickly turns red hot when Boston Detective D.D. Warren, victim-turned-vigilante Flora Dane, and SSA Kimberly Quincy join forces to investigate what may be the remains of one of Jacob Ness's first victim, or evidence of something far worse.
Thank you Netgalley and Dutton for the review copy. This is my honest opinion.
