Description: Veteran FBI profiler Maggie O’Dell and Assistant Director Cunningham believed the threat targeted Quantico. It targeted them.
A deadly virus—virtually undetectable until it causes death from a million internal cuts. The victims appear random, but Maggie wonders if vengeance isn’t the guiding hand.
An aficionado of contemporary killers, using bits and pieces from their crimes—the Beltway Sniper’s phrases, the Unabomber’s clues, the Anthrax Killer’s delivery.
Maggie knows dangerous minds, but she must tackle this new opponent from within a biosafety isolation ward—while waiting to see if death is already multiplying inside her body. She just fears her last case might end with the most intelligent killer she’s ever faced escalating from murder…to epidemic.
My Thoughts: Maggie's story continues when she and the FBI are called to a scene that involves a possible biological weapon being used after having found a threatening warning in a box of donuts that were delivered directly to their office. Maggie and Director Cunningham enter the home of a mother and child, where the child appears to be well but the mother appears to be on her death bed. Maggie and the Director react immediately and call for back-up. As the story continues and the investigation moves forward, the FBI starts to notice similarities between this crime and others. For example, they noticed the names of some of the victims of the Tylenol killer were the same of the victims in this case. The FBI is not working this case alone due to the biological weapon that is being used. USAAID, a military biological weapon research facility, has been called in to assist with finding out what the biological weapon is and how to contain it.
Alex Kava does a great job in roping you into the story from the very beginning and then keeping you on the edge of your seat with suspense. There was one chapter where the employees of USAAID were being introduced which I found tedious because it was unclear how the background of each of the main employees was relevant to the story.
Alex Kava does a great job by having done research for the book about true crime facts and and adding those facts into the story line. For example, Alex Kava provides case details on the anthrax killer case and the Tylenol murders.
Alex Kava is continuing to keep Maggie a mystery as far as her lovers go, and its hard to know whats going to happen with the big shot police officer now turned lawyer and her forensic lover. The story between Tully and Maggie's best friend continues to evolve as well.
Rating: 4 out of 5
